SDSU takes 4th at President's Day Invite

SDSU-California

The Federalis went into this weekends tournament with high hopes. They were playing in their own city and got seeded into power pools with Claremont, UCSB, California and Chico. They also were returning one of their captains Tyler Crothers who had been out for a few weeks with injury. Their first game proved to be one of the toughest of the weekend where they faced number seven in the nation and number one overall at the tournament: Cal-Berkeley. That didnt seem to faze the Feds as they went up early and took half 7-5. The momentum turned towards Cals behalf in the second half however, as they ended up tying the game at 11 and they took a 12-11 lead before the soft cap blew. SDSU then received the pull and turned it over on a barely overthrown huck that Kyle Gordon almost brought down with an incredible bid. Determined to get the disc back, Tim Gilligan made an incredible poach lay-out D that got the Feds the disc near Cals endzone. Another costly turnover led to Kyle Gordon having to make the D this time as the Feds got it again near Cals goal. JT made sure not to allow another turnover as he brought in Kyles bladey flick for the score: 12-12 game to 14. Cal then scored quickly to make it 13-12 right before the hard cap blew. That meant SDSU had to score and force double game point or it was game over. Perhaps their nerves got the best of them as they forced a huck that led to a turnover and Cal put in the score to win the game 14-12.

SDSU-Claremont
Coming off a heartbreaking loss to Cal, the Feds came out flat and went down 6-2 to their regional rivals, a huge deficit when it comes to Ultimate. Having been down and in this situation numerous times before, the Feds knew exactly what to do. Slowly chip away at the big deficit, and put themselves within striking distance within the last couple points of the game. Rising up for the challenge, the Feds fought back brilliantly. Huge flat marks slowed down the big hucks from Claremont, and a couple of fortunate turns and big defensive plays brought the Feds back into the game. The Feds were on defense on universe point, and forced Claremont into a high stall count huck that went ob. The Feds worked it up the field, and scored the game winner. The huge comeback was complete.

SDSU-UCSB
The Feds had never beaten UCSB up until this game. With that in mind, the blitz was on. Both teams played a subpar game, but that didnt take away from the intensity. The Feds took it to black tide right from the get go, never trailing and winning 10-6. One of the Feds captain, Tyler Crothers #31, provided the end of game entertainment after being called for traveling on the goal line for the second time within 30 seconds. Once he threw the game winner, Tide called travel and Tyler erupted. He pointed to his foot, yelled "That is not a travel! NO CALL!" and celebrated the victory. This was one of the sweetest victories for the veterans on the team, especially Kyle Gordon, because they finally broke through the Tide barrier.

SDSU-Chico State
After the excitement of beating UCSB, SDSU came out smokin against Chico. Up 4-0 and eventually 8-3, the Feds were rolling. But a scrappy Chico team did not give up. The Feds relaxed and before they knew it the score was 9-8, Feds up by one. Chico had the disc and worked it up into the red zone. Chico's best player went upline and might have made the play of the weekend with an amazing layout catch for the score. 9-9. The score went to 11-11. Universe point. The Feds were chilly with the disc and got some huge gainers coming out of the spread offense. In the end, it was the 916 boys connecting on an upline cut for the game winner. Game over. Day over. The Feds finished pool play 3-1 and had a first round bye into Sundays quarterfinals.

SDSU-UCSB
In a rematch of yesterday's pool play game, the Feds once again took it to the Black Tide. Tide decided to wear their white jerseys instead of their traditional black ones because it was a real hot day, and that set the tone for the game. The hungrier Feds embraced the toughness of the black and beat Tide for the second time in two days. Highlights of the game include Richard Prodan's tip toe catch for a score deep in the endzone, Tim Gilligans huge layout score, and Lambchop's huge sky score to take half.

SDSU-UCSD
This was the game the Feds had been waiting for. The Feds had taken UCSD to universe point the last two times they had played each other, unfortunately losing both times. Fired up and poised for whatever the Squids threw at them, the Feds went up 4-2. With a chance for a break and a 5-2 lead, luck was not on the Feds side and this was possibly the turning point in the game. The Feds got the D, but immediately turned it over. This happened four or five times on this point, but SDSU could not get the disc off the goal line with a cutter heavy line. The squids scored to make it 4-3, and eventually rolled off 8 consecutive points. The final score was 13-6, and the squids were going to the championship game.

SDSU-Claremont
SDSU came out flat and never really made a rally against Claremont.

SDSU finished 4th at a fairly elite tournament, and they hope to build on their success.
thanks to Lambchop for the writeup
