Federalis break seed and get 8th at Santa Barbara Invite
The SDSU Federalis recently traveled to Santa Barbara, California for a Frisbee tournament. The tournament was supposed to consist of 16 teams, but due to weather conditions, the pool was narrowed down to 12. The teams were re-seeded and we were set to match up against UC Santa Cruz and UC San Diego, a cross-town rival.
We came out sluggish in the first half of the game against Santa Cruz. With three goal-line turns to start the game, the Federalis dug themselves a hole they could not quite crawl out of. Santa Cruz led at the half, 7-3. Due to time constraints, the game was called with a 9-6 result and first loss of the season for the Federalis. However, winning the shortened second half 3-2, the SDSU men were encouraged and ready for the next game. The Feds came out hot in the game and took a 7-3 lead in a quick first half that saw them firing on all cylinders, starting the game with two breaks. Unfortunately, the UCSD Air Squids remained composed and worked their way back into the game tying it at 9-9. The cap went off which went we were headed for a universe point or next point wins. The height disadvantage finally got to the Federalis, as the Squids captain skied a couple of players to win the game. Although we started the season with two losses, we were encouraged and realized how close we are to something great.
After turning our backs on the two losses and looking forward, the SDSU men saw the University of Washington Wolf pack in their sights. UW finished third in the notoriously strong northwest region behind Cal and Stanford. We knew it would be a tough fight. With strong playing from JT Power and Branden thegreatest Murray, the Federalis went up early only to let up in the second half. We were down 11-9 and knew we had to score quickly before the cap went off. After two quick breaks, the Feds tied up the game to make the score 11-11. The cap then went off meaning the game was forced to double game point. The Federalis have live and died on the universe point throughout their clubs history and on this occasion they lived in a big way. The Federalis pulled the disc and UW turned it down field. We then turned it back over to give the Wolf Pack another shot. Luckily UW threw a huck a little too far and SDSU was given another chance. The Feds worked it up the field when Tim Gilligan got the disc on the break side about 30 yards out from the endzone. Hesaw a streaking JT Power down the field and put an OI flick that hit JT as he cradled the disc to the ground, and the Feds won their first win of the season.
We thought that we were going to have a buy, which meant about an hour off or so, but due to scheduling confusion the Feds were going to play Colorado Mamabird in 5 minutes. Colorado lost in the finals last year, putting them at the number two team in the country. Mentally and physically tired, the Feds made too many mistakes and made it too easy for Mamabird to have their way on both offense and defense. The Feds fell to Colorado 13-6 in one of their tougher losses in some time.
The next morning SDSU was playing for 5th place in the tournament after being seeded 12th. The Feds came out flat on their second day as well, falling to both UC Santa Barbara and Stanford, by 5 points and 4 point respectively, in games that could have and will see the Feds coming on top in the next matchup.
